The first two are pretty decent; in the first, a military commander dying of a brain tumor has his psyche transplanted into the "Shaggy Man", a near unbeatable android. In the second, Amazo, an android with the powers of all the JLA, awakens with programmed orders to destroy the JLA. The action and character interaction is pretty good, and the means used to defeat both foes is imaginative and interesting. After that, things go downhill; there is a multi-issue epic battle against some baddies from the 5th Dimension that goes confusingly overboard on new and old JLA members. This is followed by a story in which the foe is a White Martian, and really, the only bit of interest lies in the disagreement between Batman and Superman about whether to reveal their secret identities to the other JLA members. The artwork is decent, but uneven. A large compilation, but the JLA, like the Legion of Superheroes, has become too big and unwieldy to sustain interest for an entire storyline. The best part, as usual, is the emotions and interactions between the heroes. Unlike the '60's, these characters actually have distinct and consistent personalities. "In this collection, Batman, Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman and the rest of the JLA face a multitude of threats from all directions. First the team must battle against the Ultra-Marines, an elite squad of government super beings led by the indestructible General. Next, the group finds themselves traveling through dimensions and fighting alongside the legendary members of the JSA. And as Gotham City lays ravaged by an Earthquake, the JLA secretly patrol the area deemed "No Man's Land" by the government, to clandestinely help Batman in his quest to reclaim his home"--Publisher's web site.
