The year is 1793, the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, and Horatio Hornblower, a seventeen-year-old boy unschooled in seafaring and the ways of seamen, is ordered to board a French merchant ship and take command of crew and cargo for the glory of England. Though not an unqualified success, this first naval adventure teaches the young midshipman enough to launch him on a series of increasingly glorious exploits. This novel-in which young Horatio gets his sea legs, proves his mettle, and shows the makings of the legend he will become-is the first of the eleven swashbuckling Hornblower tales that are today regarded as classic adventure stories of the sea.… (plus d'informations)

ktoonen: If you can accept the fact that dragons happen to exist, the tone, style, and language make this series a great read-alike for the Horatio Hornblower series.

Although this book recounts the first years of Hornblower's career in the Royal Navy, it was published in 1950, about 14 years after the publication of Flying Colors, the first of the Captain Hornblower series. I felt kinship and sympathy for Hornblower when he first came on board the ship of the line Justinian, and was taunted for his seasickness. The rest of the book follows him through daring and successful adventures, to prison in Spain, and a pardon for rescuing Spanish sailors in a storm
I think I read this after several other Hornblower books, but still early in 8th grade. I owned the paperback, then a hardcover "Young Hornblower" collection of novels about his early career, now a volume in the Foliio complete collection of the Hornblower saga ( )

A January gale was roaring up the Channel, blustering loudly, and bearing in its bosom rain squalls whose big drops rattled loudly on the tarpaulin clothing of those among the officers and men whose duties kept them on deck.
