I enjoyed this one.
T. Tembarom, a sharp young lad who has worked his way up from nothing to becoming a journalist. He lives in a New York boarding house and has the good sense to listen to advice given to him, especially by the daughter of a Lancashire inventory whom he falls in love with.

He befriends an amnesiac gentleman whom he rescues from the street.

We discover that our protagonist is heir to an English fortune, and he travels to England. Ann, his love, makes him swear that he'll live without her for a year, in order to be certain that he won't prefer a rich/titled Englishwoman to her.

He takes his amnesiac friend with him, and we gradual y realise the true identity of the gentleman. I wondered for a long time why it took T. Tembarom so long to work out who he was, but eventually realised that he did know, but had to have proof - and had to obtain that proof without the risk of severely damaging his friend's sanity if he got it wrong. (and also the distress that might be caused to others)

I think my favourite character is the little old lady he discovers has been living in a small room in the stately home as a distant relative being given (very limited) charity by the previous Lord. To an orphan with no living relatives, she is manna from heaven, and they develop a close, loving relationship. ( )

What's that, Burnett? Stuffy old England can old be revitalized with good-old American knowhow? You don't say. C'mon, get a new deal. How do you swing so easily between magnificence and tedium?
