Saul: oratorio concerns Saul's fall from the throne and his replacement by David as King of Israel.
Israel in Egypt is a short oratorio about the Exodus.
Messiah covers the life of Christ from the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah to come to Christ's Passion and Resurrection and ends with the Final Judgement and the World to Come.
Belshazzar depicts the fall of Babylon to Persia and the famous "writing on the wall" that seals the king's fate.
Theodora is a non-Biblical oratorio about two lovers who are martyred for their Christian faith in Roman Antioch.
Jephtha is the tragedy of Jephtha and his daughter, with a non-canonical ending (suffice to say she isn't physically sacrificed).
What really impressed me was the realization that all of Messiah is a synthesis of Biblical verses. The Reclam edition cites the source verses in the page margins, which is super helpful for looking things up. Reading a libretto is not the same experience as watching it done live, but it has it's own pleasures. Recommended for music fans and those interested in the Messiah beyond the famous chorus. ( )
