Determined to throw off her clinging mother and persistent paramour, young Betty Haverhill books a passage to Europe by tramp freighter. This gets rid of mother, but dogged Ted Bunpole surprises Betty by turning up on board also. Early on in the voyage tensions arise with dramatic results.

A sea voyage Betty, the Captain and crew and the other passengers will not forget for the rest of their lives - those that ARE left alive.

This is early Vance – not much of the mordant wit or telling narrative that is so recognisably Vance is apparent, but the story line moves apace and the descriptions of people and places typically well formed. I satisfactory read ( )
