This story tells about the life of Joe Lewis, whom some call the greatest boxer of all time. It tells of his childhood where he was a poor child in Alabama attending segregated schools. His mother remarries and moves the family to Detroit where he visits his first boxing gym. It depicts his amateur and professional fights as well as his time in the army.

I enjoyed this story partially because I am a huge sports fan. I also enjoyed reading how Joe Lewis faced adversity with being an African-American and overcoming those adversities to become the undefeated world champion.

This book could be used as an extension of a lesson on segregation and how this affected sports. Another use for this book could be an extension of wartimes and how even famous people joined the armed forces and fought for their country.
