I think my favorite part was when, after Viney is sexually assaulted by some dude, the guy she's interested in assumes she was cheating on him and she has to change everything about herself in order to prompt him to finally talk to her. (He doesn't apologize, only tells her he likes her better in her usual clothes, etc.) Or, oh! Maybe my favorite part is that in the process of changing everything about herself, Viney has to go to the sister who's derided and sneered at her throughout the book and apologize (presumably for being too backward and provincial) and beg for that sister's assistance. (Said sister proceeds to alter Viney's new gown without Viney's knowledge so it has an uncomfortably low neckline and needs to be worn with a corset so tight Viney can't breathe.) ...No. My favorite part is definitely when, after all her contortions to get that guy's attention, he decides he wants to move to Michigan and hopes Viney will be willing to leave her family and beloved mountain for him. Clearly I, like Viney, should've quit while I was ahead. ( )

Viney, a spirited 16-year-old girl in nineteenth-century rural Appalachia, is a gi ed weaver, but wants more for herself than the traditional fate of a mountain woman. She is wary of a group of Englishmen who arrive to build a settlement and bring change to her world
