This was about a little girl Cora, she was the youngest in her family and wanted to help her mom cook but her older siblings would do most of the jobs and she just got the kid jobs. But one day all of her siblings had left and it was her chance to help her mom cook. She even got to choose what they made. Cora got do do all the grown-up jobs. In the end everyone was surprised that she was the one that helped mom, but everyone loved the pancit.

In a beautiful short story about Cora learning how to cook pancit, this children's book demonstrates how food can bring culture and family together. This is an excellent book to show a portion of what it is like to share and celebrate culture and food! I believe that this is a story that all children can learn from, and this can be a vital and important piece to add to any young reader's library. Although the content is important for all ages to understand, the language of the book may be too easy or simple for advanced readers (minus the Filipino words and foods listed in the back) and therefore would be more successful in being with younger readers instead.

For beginning readers. Cora is a young girl who wants to learn how to cook from her mother. While she learns how to cook traditional Filipino food, she learns about her family history. It includes a recipe for Pancit on the back. ( )

In my opinion, this was a great book. The writing was organized and engaging. For example, it says, “Cora knew the rules in Mama’s kitchen. She scrubbed her hands with soap.” This can allow the readers and audience to connect to their personal lives and what the rules are in their kitchen at their own home. The character Cora was very believable and easy to connect with. She was a young girl who wanted to learn her culture while doing something she loves which was cooking. She had siblings who never cleaned up after themselves which prevented her from being in the kitchen. Children can also relate to wanting to be able to do things with their mother and getting involved in their cultural background. The illustrations are appropriate to the mood of the story and fit the written text. For example, it says, onions make us cry, sang Mama. They both laughed.” The image of Cora and her mother laughing allow the audience to feel the mood of the story. You can see how happy Cora is to be cooking with her mother and getting this opportunity with one on one learning. The message of this book is how important family is and being able to know your cultural background and heritage. ( )
