More Jack! And this it's the big battle schene in this universe, much like in [b:Fables, Vol. 11: War and Pieces|3392123|Fables, Vol. 11 War and Pieces|Bill Willingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375393981l/3392123._SX50_.jpg|3431993]. Gary (the Pathetic Fallacy) really shines here:

No horses? Use anything close!

IT LIVES!

And of course as comedic relief the entire time as well:

It's a bit telling just how strange the Literals are and also quite the twist for Jack to be half Literal.

Wait. What does that mean for John of Fables? Where'd he go anyways? ( )

This collection has redeemed the series for me :) It has the engaging story the last couple volumes lacked. Welcome back, Jack! ( )

Another short book, Volume 6 deals with the confrontation at the Golden Boughs. For a time it looks like the Bookburner and his horde will overtake Mr. Revise’s people, but Jack, in all his military glory has something to say about this. Of course, being Jack most of what he says is nonsense!

Lots of action, some humor, and a few secrets revealed. The volume closes by whetting the readers appetite for the next volume in the Fables series. The Great Fables Crossover. I did however, feel that this issue was a little on the rushed side, but I will be returning to Jack’s story after the next Fables book. ( )

Summary: Jack has had his differences with Mr. Revise, the Page sisters, and the staff of the Golden Boughs retirement home for Fables. But despite the animosity that exists between them, they must join forces to fight off an even bigger danger: The Bookburner, who has marched with his army to the Golden Boughs, intent on ridding the world of the Fables, whatever it takes.

Review: I enjoyed this volume more than I did several of the previous Jack of Fables collections, perhaps because we finally start to learn some of the secrets behind the story. We get to find out more about Revise's plan, the relationships between the Literals, and some dark secrets about Jack's past. The action and fight scenes are well-done, and the artwork is great as usual. I also thought that there was more comic relief than normal (or maybe more of the comedy worked for me than normal.) Babe was hilarious as always, but I also found the Knifejohns funny (if also nightmare-inducing), more of Jack's narration worked, and even Kevin Thorne got in a one-liner or two. 4 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: I'm never going to be as invested in this series as I am in Fables proper, but it's a fun complement that's starting to get a fair amount of depth of its own. ( )
