Flowers On The Wall (édition 1996)

Rachel, her brother, mother, and father all live in Poland. Jews are not treated fairly in Poland at the time, and Rachel's dad and brother and mother must all go work different jobs to try and earn some money. Rachel is sick and does not have any shoes that fit her so she stays at home cleaning all day. One day her father brings home some paints and paint brushes and Rachel begins to cover the walls with beautiful flowers. Rachel does an amazing job trying to make something positive during this dark time for her family. Stories like this that are from a child's perspective always make the story more personal and relatable to students reading it. Reading different books that take place during the Holocaust, gives students different perspectives of what people and children endured at the time. ( )

Flowers On The Wall centers around a young Jewish girl who is trapped inside of her family's house due to an illness, then a lack of shoes, and then because of the German invasion. To pass time, she paints flowers on the walls of her family's house. The book illustrates the family's struggles and ultimately leads to the family's tragic end during the Holocaust. I would use this story to teach children about the affects of World War II. ( )

A very good book that explains with its pictures and texts the cruelties Jewish families had to go trough during Hitler's dictatorship. It shows that at the worst time of their life, a family still tries to continue their lives and think positive. ( )
