Pearl, vingt-et-un ans, et May, dix-huit ans, sont sœurs. Elles mènent une vie insouciante jusqu'au jour où leur père leur annonce qu'elles vont se marier. Il a arrangé cela avec un homme à qui il doit de l'argent.
Leur insouciance s'arrête brutalement : leur père, ruiné, décide de les vendre à des Chinois de Californie, venus chercher des épouses en Chine.
Puis, c'est la guerre avec les Japonais et elles doivent s'exiler. Leurs maris sont aux Etats-Unis et elles les rejoignent.
Le roman raconte le périple de leur voyage et leur installation dans la communauté chinoise de Los Angeles.
Les 2 sœurs vivent les évènements de façon différente : ce récit est intéressant dans ces deux visions de l'exil. Il montre aussi le quotidien de la société chinoise et comment des "enfants de papier" venus s'installer aux USA pour vivre le rêve américain ont subi le racisme.
