A controversial and fascinating attempt to define what is 'contemporary' about contemporary art, and the dramatic changes that have taken place in the last twenty years. Stallabrass reveals the growing inclusiveness of the contemporary art world, pointing to the greatly increased visibility for women and non-western artists, and the blurring of boundaries between art and other areas of culture. Does this modernization threaten to undermine the world of art as we know it, or is this. just another example of a global market demanding a certain product? And where are the artists in all this? - ;T… (plus d'informations)

Focuses too much on the relationship between art and economics instead of showing us the actual art. ( )

This book is less about art works than it is about the art world. It attempts to evaluate the art world's self-images, and to explain the art-world economy and its place in global political economies. It is a dense book, requiring close attention to keep up with the strands of argument; but it does not reek of social-scientific verbosity. Even if one finally rejects all or part of the argument, it will have made one do some hard thinking.

I had been looking for a book that would explain to me why I should give a rat's backside about art critics' and curators' evaluations of contemporary art. This provided a partial answer to that question. I thought that the argument is well-made. I wish it were more comprehensive, but then it is constrained by being an introduction and by being about contemporary art. I know I did not fully understand it the first time through, so I will have to read it again. I look forward to doing so. ( )

Think first of the use contemporary artists make of human bodies: hair teased into patterns that form Chinese characters, or woven into a rug, or plucked from the artist's body to be inserted into a diminutive waxwork rendition of the corpse of the artist's father; blood let drip from self-inflicted wounds onto canvas, or made into a self-portrait bust; marks made on drawings — or over crucifixes — by ejaculating over them; cosmetic surgery undergone as performance art; human ears grown in Petri dishes; a baby's corpse cooked and (apparently) eaten.
