A page turner ... I read it very quickly because I wanted to find out why the husband had been banished to sleep in the studio away from his family. I think I only gave it two stars because it turned out to be more depressing than I expected and I'm getting tired of reading dark, sad stories. Having said that, I couldn't put it down; but wasn't thrilled with the ending. This was about two families (friends)with a very nice life (both doctors) coming undone because of the actions of the friend's daughter and the later relationship between that daughter and the main character's son. I know that's kind of cryptic but I don't want to give anything away. ( )

And the moral of the story is 'let your children go'. ( )

At the end of this book, there is A Short Note From the Author. She explains, in answer to a question she is frequently asked, how she was able to so accurately write from the viewpoint of a father in his mid-fifties when she was a childless female in her early thirties. "... despite our differences, I knew this guy. I knew him!" And in fact, she did; I thought her characterization of Dr. Pete was extremely well done and could've made an amazing book. This is why the book gets a generous 2 1/2 stars from me.

The problem was that she didn't seem to give any other characters in the book more than two seconds of her attention. For secondary characters, she picked out the usual suspects: Spoiled Brat Son, Wife Who Doesn't Realize She Was His Distant Second Choice, Emasculated Best Friend, Best Friend's Wife aka The One That Got Away, etc. Then she made them all incredibly stupid.

That any one of these people would believe any of the things they were told towards the end of this book (with absolutely no proof) defies credibility. Their extreme reactions to being told these things are ludicrous. If you appreciate logic in your reading, skip this book. ( )

Pretty absorbing, once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The story jumps around a lot, and has a lot of flashbacks, so it can be a little hard to follow at times but in the end it all comes together. I liked the way the writer portrayed a family dynamic, and the way she gave just enough info about what was currently going on to give you a thread to grasp at until you got the next piece of the story. Probably won't read it again, but it was worth reading. ( )

I was hoping/expecting more. I had read so many great reviews. It was good but not great (or at least not as great as I thought it'd be). ( )

Grodstein is a terrific storyteller and an even better ventriloquist. She beautifully captures Pete’s sly self-deceptions: the man-of-the-people persona that masks his deeply rooted elitism, the liberal pose that hides an almost pathological conservatism.

These days, when people ask how I'm doing - some of them still ask, you'd be surprised - I shrug and say, as manfully as I can, "Much better than you'd think."
