A Robin Hood for the 90's, light years removed from the romantic vision of Errol Flynn ... but this gritty, pumped-up version can stand on its own. Rough, tough, and a rousing good time, with this version of the Sheriff of Nottingham a real surprise.
There are a couple scenes that aren't boring. Most of the entertainment comes from wondering at the weird casting and weirder acting choices. Alan Rickman does his best to save the movie. ( )
This is such an enjoyable film even though it is in many ways completely daft. Kevin Costner does his bit and Alan Rickman chews the scenery with relish. I've watched it many times but this was my first viewing on the BluRay version and it has some extra scenes which was a great surprise when I know the original DVD so well. Do you want an enjoyable few hours where the good guys win and the bad guys get their just desserts? - then this is the film for you. ( )
Costner is a boorish Robin Hood- but to all luck he has Morgan Freeman as side-kick, and Alan Rickman as a foe, which make watching worthwhile. The costumes have very little to do with what you actually wore at the time, but are visually elegant. ( )
Amazon.com Kevin Costner's lousy English accent is a small obstacle in this often exciting version of the Robin Hood fable. That aside, it's refreshing to have a preface to the old story in which we meet the robber hero of Sherwood Forest as a soldier in King Richard's Crusades, coming home to find his people under siege from the cruelties of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). After Robin and his community of outcasts and fighters take to the trees, director Kevin Reynolds (Fandango, 187) is on more familiar narrative ground, and he goes for the gusto with lots of original action (Robin shoots two arrows simultaneously from his bow in two directions). Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as Marion, makes a convincing damsel in distress, and Morgan Freeman brings dignity to his role as Robin's Moor friend. Alan Rickman, however, gets the most attention for his scene-chewing role as the rotten sheriff, an almost campy performance that is highly entertaining but perhaps a little out of sorts with the rest of the film. --Tom Keogh
