The main message that one gets from this book is the importance of family, and that one must do whatever they can to ensure the safety of your family. There was only one thing that I didn't like about the book and that was there was a point that is said they boiled the pearl in order to save their fathers life. Then a couple pages later they say that when the soldier came looking for the pearl they found it in the house of the six brothers. However I was under the impression that they boiled it and the father drank it in order to get better. so that was a bit confusing to me. However the rest of the book was pretty clever. The book was fairly organized, and after a while became very predicable. the writing was fairly easy to follow, and the language was fairly simple as well. The characters were very simple, you found out that each brother had a special ability and after that point you kind of just went along with it. The illustrations were done it either black or red. the colors alternated and emphasized different parts of the page depending on what was happening in the story. Most of the time the brothers were done in black ink unless they were the subject of the page then they were red. Once I got over the reappearing pearl, I thought It was a great story and "example of devotion to family." ( )

Six Chinese Brothers was an interesting folktale to read with a great message. One thing I enjoyed about the story was the use of the brothers’ special attributes in creative ways, which played into the main idea of the story. For example, the first son was brought to the king to be beheaded and using his cleverness, he asked the king to see his father one more time but he sent the third son because he had a head hard enough to break steel. They used each of the son’s abilities to survive the king’s attempts to have them killed, which I thought was really intriguing. Another thing I liked about the book was the illustrations. All of the drawings were either in black or red and it was drawn in a style that reminded me of a Chinese style of art, which added to the tradition feel. The main idea of the story is devotion to family, which was seen because the son’s saved their father and then used their abilities to save each other. ( )
