Edgar Award winning author Theresa Schwegel's fourth novel features a female detective chasing a serial rapist across Chicago, from the westside slums to the glitz of the Loop. Detective Sloane Pearson is new to the Sex Crimes Division but no stranger to being treated like an incompetent blonde by her hardened male co-workers. She's also no stranger to hard-to-crack cases, and her latest is as tough as they come: A rapist is on the prowl, dragging women to deserted building sites or vacant apartment buildings peppered all over downtown Chicago, and forcing them to fight---knowing, of course, that he'll win. When a real estate agent Sloane knows is attacked by the violent predator, Sloane finds herself taking a case that threatens her secret plans to leave her long-time lover. Her personal bond with the victim and a would-be relationship with a man she interviews along the way lead Sloane down a dangerous path---one that poisons the investigation as well as her personal life. Sloane's balancing act topples when her father falls ill. Between coping with his weak heart and following the few weak leads she has, her case begins to go the way that many rape cases go: The victims fall away, one by one, suddenly unsure of what they saw or unwilling to relive the horrifying moments again and again. When Sloane helps a hungry young Sun-Times reporter declare the case serial, she loses support: Her bosses demand she get a suspect or move on. Sloane stays on the case, though---no matter how much it strains her personal relationships. Even her partner claims she's in too deep: He doesn't believe there's an arrest on the planet worth a cop's life. Sloane disagrees: Someone's got to take up the fight. From the worst slums of Chicago's west side to the glittering Loop skyscrapers, Sloane finds no shortage of suspects. As she loses everything she'd called home, she can only hope to find the rapist before she also becomes a victim.… (plus d'informations)

TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR SEXUAL ASSALT VICTIMS

I was not expecting to like this book this much. But dang! WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?! SERIOUSLY?! WHY WOULD YOU END IT THERE! ( )

The focus of the book is Detective Sloane Pearson and her bid to solve what may be a serial rapist on the loose. Her quest is made almost impossible by the fact that the victims don't seem to want to talk and this makes information gathering impossible. But Detective Sloane is supposedly very determined and will not be thwarted. Oh and her whole squad is peopled by incompetents and she is the only one who cares about anything or any of the victims. But she is determined to get her man, something she eventually does, the end!

This story was very hard to get into because Detective Sloane was herself not too likable. We kept hearing about how hard it is for her being in a man's world as the only woman on the team. Maybe its the way she was developed as a character, I felt very, very little sympathy for her. Her encounters with her co workers and superiors boiled down to caricatures and I found Detective Sloane to be as unlikable as her colleagues. In addition, she comes off as having a crater size chip on her shoulder.

The writing style of the book was awful, meandering and down right distracting. One minute she is investigating a crime, then she is worried about her father and then she is...let's be honest, who cares. Hated this book from start to finish and I am glad I can now put it behind me and run. ( )

I have had the worst time trying to stay with this book. I think that it would have been better if it had stayed with the crime genre rather than jumping back and forth from Det Pearsons personal life, to the crimes at hand, to her coworkers sexist actions, and back again. I had a very hard time reading this book. When I set it down I really didnt want to pick it up again, and being an avid reader, that is something that you want from a book, the drive to finish it. The points of view were also too random and jumpy for me. Sorry but this wont get a second read from me. ( )

Set in various neighborhoods in Chicago, we follow Detective Sloane Pearson as she works on what might be a serial rapist case. She feels like she is the only one who cares about getting real police work done, at first coming off as an arrogant, naive officer. She is also throwing herself into her work as her personal relationships deteriorate and her father’s health fails. Soon working a tightrope between her superiors at work and shady Chicago politics, this story pulled me right along with it. I didn't realize it was the second in a series, and worked fine as a stand-alone, although I wondered if there was more to Pearson's background than was given here. I think this book would appeal to readers of Alafair Burke. ( )

Schwegel doesn’t advance her staid but serviceable style by pointlessly shifting the narrative voice, but she’s consistently firm on her theme: the vulnerability of young women forced to become “social pioneers” by making their homes in the only neighborhoods they can afford — the dangerous ones.
