A family buys apples at a farmers' market and makes applesauce together throughout the fall, noticing how the color and flavor of the sauce changes along with the different varieties of apples. Lots of apple info and a recipe! ( )

This book is about a family and their tradition of making applesauce every year when apples are in season. The book walks through the process of the family buying, peeling, cooking, and finally eating the applesauce together. I would read this to a 3rd grade class (8 years old). I found this book at North Star Elementary school library.

This is the story of a family that has a tradition of making applesauce every year. The story is told by a young boy who goes through the stories and memories of making applesauce with his grandmother. The applesauce is not only a fun tradition but brings the whole family together for a large feast. ( )

A young boy narrates the tale of his urban family and their autumn tradition of applesauce making in this appealing picture-book, which features three generations who all get in on the act. Beginning when school opens, and apples become available at the farmers' market, the boy and his grandmother go shopping, hauling home six pounds of the fruit, and as many more for "eating out of hand." Then the applesauce-making begins in earnest, using all different kinds of apples - MacIntosh, Macoun, Ida Red - and drawing in all the members of the family.

A celebration of family traditions and gatherings, Applesauce Season is a lovely autumn-themed tale, one of the few such titles I have encountered that is set in the city, rather in more rural environments. Lipson's narrative is engaging, and Mordicai Gerstein's illustrations appealing - for some reason, I particularly liked the thick red glasses worn by the boy and his grandmother! I rather wish I had waited for the fall to read this, as it has such a feeling of the season! Recommended to young apple-lovers, and to children looking for autumn stories. ( )

This book would be great to read in the fall. The story is about the traditions that the family has making applesauce during harvest season. Family traditions that have created lasting memories on the young boy who carried on the traditions as an adult. This is a great book that combines information with a great story. ( )

Narrated by a young boy, “Applesauce Season,” by Eden Ross Lipson, unfolds as an artful blend of family ritual and recipe, with members of three generations of urban homebodies and apple fanciers taking part in a seasonal rite that leads from farmers’ market to stove top to dining room table.
