While this is only 82 pages, I didn't find this a quick read. It's not difficult or anything, just a little slow compared to Hunger. Took me awhile to get into the story. ( )

Victoria is fine, but Knut Hamsun in his early career was at his best when writing from emotional extremes, and while there are a few of those in Victoria, this is mostly just a regular old sad story. It is of course Hamsun, so the writing is great, but I'd read all his other stuff first. ( )

Full of emotions and tender words the books started to overwhelm me with its strong romantic sense after twenty pages. And it goes on and on till it ends, too much even for a classic piece. Maybe European impressionism is not really for me!

Een molenaarszoon wordt verliefd op het meisje van het landgoed, Victoria. Zij wordt heen en weer geslingerd tussen het beantwoorden van die liefde en het standsverschil en de eisen van haar vader om "geld" te trouwen, zodat het landgoed niet te gronde gaat. Uiteindelijk loopt alles slecht af. De molenaarszoon heeft zijn liefde dan al gesublimeerd door er gedichten en boeken over te schrijven die veel gelezen worden.
