I would have liked this book a lot more if the author explicitly stated that Alice B. Toklas was more than just Gertrude Stein's "best friend." ( )

Paris is very busy. The people in the story have a long day ahead of them before they have to attend a soiree. Basically, a day in Paris with friends is what to expect. The characters are all artists of some sort. Whether it be a writer, painter, or inventor, they are all creative in some way. ( )

I picked this book because it looked like it had a very different kind of style and indeed it did. The book starts off by a picture of a road with a kitten written walking on the road to many buildings. The buildings were painted yellow and blue, the road was yellow with green. The setting of this book is in paris france, in which one can see in every picture. The pictures give the reader a vibe of the place and time of this story. This story is about Picasso and his friends. I rated the book a two because other than the pictures that give a good representation of the setting, it had no climax, conflict, or plot. It's as if the book was just taking the readers to meet Picasso, Gertrude, Max, Apollinaire, and Tolkas. In all honesty, this is was a very uninteresting book to read. However, If i wanted to assess children about settings, I would definietly use this book because it has many pictures where you can tell the place is paris and the timing was a long time ago due to the characters' clothing. In this story the reader is introduced to five talented people in Paris and given a glimpse of what a "soiree" with all of them in attendance would be like. My favorite part of this book was the illustrations. They were so colorful and bright, every page demanded an extra moment to just appreciate the pictures. This book also has many learning opportunities for students about the people, their work, Paris, French culture and language, etc. ( )

Not really sure of the point of this book. Are their picture book readers who are interested in Gertrude Stein and can follow a very confusing narrative? The story didn't work for me.
The illustrations are very nice, but in a few places they reminded me too much of the Bemelman's Madeline illustrations of Paris. ( )
