The Maginot Line, the massive series of fortifications built by France in the 1930s to defend its borders with Germany and Italy, is perhaps the most maligned collection of fortifications ever built. Despite being a technological marvel, and the most sophisticated and complex set of fortifications built up to that time, it failed to save France from crushing defeat in 1940. Having decided that I like this booklet well enough to actually go ahead and buy it, what it boils down to is that this is the best concise examination of the famous fortication system that I've seen. This is even as compared to the competitively priced paperback edition of "Fortress France" by Kaufmann & Kaufmann. ( )

The Maginot Line, the massive series of fortifications built by France in the 1930's to defend its borders with Germany and Italy, is perhaps the most maligned collection of fortifications ever built, commonly viewed as an abject failure, a disaster for France, a total waste of both money and manpower, and a monument of the folly of static defence.
