As chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee in the US Congress during the Civil War, Thaddeus Stevens championed the downtrodden and was in the forefront of the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, the abolition of slavery. This book examines his life in Gettysburg, PA primarily from 1816 to 1842. It looks at the first twenty-six years of his professional career as a way to understand his later life. His life in Gettysburg was an adventure in antebellum America. He survived several murder attempts and faced financial ruin on at least three occasions. He survived political wars and libelous newspaper attacks. These chapters are written in couplets and moves along using a themeatic approach with a legal trial introducing each.
