We're pretty far into the adventures of Jacky Faber by this point. Sometimes the dialog is a bit lazy and sometimes I am a little creeped out by how the writer - an older man - seems fixated on how cute her bottom is. Luckily, her adventures are still a lot of fun. This time she gets to spend more time with her sweetie and ends up in the Caribbean, diving for treasure. Good times. ( )

Thoughts: While still not as satisfying as the earlier books, this 7th installment was delightful and SO MUCH better than the last one. As foggi said above, Jacky is back at sea and that makes for a much better adventure.

Being a licensed scuba diver myself, the addition of deep water diving in a diving bell in the early 1800s was great. Even with my modern equipment, I've never dove further than 60 feet, being mostly a shallow reef diver, so I can imagine the terror and thrill of going down 200 feet in a bell and then free-diving on a wrecked ship!

It was also nice that Jacky and Jaimy finally got to spend actual time together as near grown-ups rather than just as children. I still don't know if I am certain he is who she should end up with, but I'm less bothered by it now. Lord Richard Allen is certainly a charming and exciting man! ;) Oh to be Jacky and have dashing men falling in love with you everywhere you go...

3.5 stars. This was better than the last. I really enjoyed the historical aspects of how technology and science was changing and the new ways they found to explore. While I'm not sure they were 100% accurate, they still have the general ideas right. A fun continuation. ( )

Jacky is all dressed in white and ready to get married to the love of her life when she is kidnapped (duh) by British Royal Intelligence. They have a new mission for her: diving for long-lost Spanish gold off the coast of Key West. (In a diving bell!!!). It sounds so perfect. She gets to travel on her ship, with her own crew. She gets to stop in Boston for a few weeks on the way. Some of the gold goes toward repaying her debt to the Crown. She is escorted around the Caribbean by the good old H.M.S. Dolphin and its third mate - LT James Emerson Fletcher! The only catch? Jacky has to remain celibate. Poor, poor Jacky! Oh, and also she might be attacked by the Spanish. Or pirates. Or the Dolphin's second mate, the vile LT Flashby. Or various sea creatures.

This is the last Jacky Faber audiobook that my library has and I am so sad right now. However, my despair was tempered by a bonus feature at the end of the audiobook: an interview session between Katherine Kellgren and L. A. Meyer. Kellgren asked Meyer about the inspiration for Jacky (a folk song called "Jackeroe") and Jacky's future (he has already written the final book and safely hidden it away, though he intends to keep writing them for awhile). Then Meyer asked Kellgren about her methods for preparing and performing the audiobooks. It was so amazing! ( )

Again for my dear Annetje.

And for Chris and Tuck and memories of Florida and the Keys.

For Betsey, too, as well as for Chelsea and Chelly, both noble Cockers, who lay by my feet all of these years and by their loving presence helped me pound out these words.
