Introduction
So much fascinating information is locked in that old family photograph, document, or story just waiting to be brought out! All that's needed is a few new tools and some creative curiosity. This book is intended to give you those tools, all you need to provide is the curiosity.
The Digital Detective
Since the advent of the internet, a digital detective has access to the genealogical equivalent of the FBI forensics laboratory, including libraries of shoes, hats, jewelry, military uniforms and insignia, plants, photographic backdrops, tools, and almost anything else that could be used in the analysis of a photograph. These libraries include the materials photos are printed on (copper, glass, tin, and types of print papers), the dimensions of photographs produced by a variety of cameras, common practices used by commercial photographers during different time periods, and the specifications of product lines of major camera companies.

In the long run there will be a fraction of participants who never connect with anyone else simply because they never connect with anyone else. We know who we are, we are sure of our patronage, at least in the recent past, yet we remain STR orphans. It could be that somewhere along the generations, all descendents were female, causing related male lines to become extinct. It also could be that we just haven't found a match yet. In my own case, I am enrolled in DNA studies covering both my father's and my mother's sides through my brother and my mother's male cousins, respectively. Yet I have not found a match on either side. There is only one conclusion I can draw from this. I have always thought my family was from another planet, and now it seems I have found proof.
