The varied and changing odd environmental and cutural details make one strongly advocate a conversion of these novels to anime. No other medium could capture th endless so well. Or the monomanic, opportunistic main character.

Also although the attitudes to and by women folk are not immediately resembling Colossus (Dennis Feltham Jones) the '60s vibe displays itself thusly:
In all the ladies that, upon exposure, become increasingly alluring to the main character by generally not conversing to him and then becoming infatuated with him but continue not to converse; passive attitudes to lady slavery, and dominance by men, often one and the same; the sense that young women are attracted to old men; when Jack Vance says "girls" are alluring to his characters he literally means young as children, in that their youth is attractive; that literary phenomenon (generalising) where ladies are raped repeatedly, are recovered recovered by the man character, are a little withdrawn and then are all fine and want to have a relationship or sex with the main man.

It is understood that our main man, driven by his search, is visiting the seedier areas. Seedy things, horrible things will occur. Our main man has not been raised with sociality in mind. Alright, such semi-demure ladies do not have to be an attitude of the '60s. However, there are seven females in the Palace of Love (a magazine HR head, a shrieking mum, her daughter, two Druid mums, a Druid daughter, and a lady who sought to visit the Palace of Love), who appear to have their own thing going, and appear to exist with their choices without being incredibly sexually assulted. There are none I can remember in the Killing Machine and only a blank faced daughter of Smade in the Star King. I mention it because this was interesting to me.

In all three novels the peoples and cultures were visually interesting. This is the best phrase ( )

Classic science-fiction about one man's quest for revenge, with characteristic Vancean wit and humour. ( )

More than anything, its Vance's writing that keeps me captivated. The soft flowing nature of his prose takes the reader into a fantasy SF world, rich with charm and adventurous plots. There are few writers like Vance. However, I suppose he's not for everyone. If your looking for Hard SF, I don't think you'll be satisfied. Still, Vance is classic SF. A good read for anyone who loves the classics. ( )
