The chapter lengths may be somewhat uneven (ranging from the twenty-seven pages covering Ignatius to the eight pages discussing the Didache), but the wealth of concentrated information provides the reader with a valuable introduction to the AF. Although the articles are written in quite a widely accessible style, they are fully referenced and engage well with current scholarship. As is inevitable with short introductions, there are many issues that are handled more briefly than one would like. However, this is a very useful, up-to-date handbook on the texts.
The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers refer to a group of miscellaneous Christian writings produced in the first and second centuries. The authors of these writings were considered by seventeenth century scholars to be the next generation of Apostles and as a result were named The Apostolic Fathers. Perceived by many scholars to be the most important collection of post-New Testament writings, a number of these texts were in fact considered for the Canon of the New Testament but later rejected.
