Gregory Fremont-Barnes examines the lives of the American Bomber Crewmen of the Eighth Air Force, 'The Mighty Eighth', who manned, maintained and repaired the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and the B-24 Liberators that flew from the airfields of England. He highlights the physical and psychological strain placed on these men, who required brute strength to control the aircraft on long bombing missions and extraordinary endurance to fly for hours at 20,000 feet at temperatures below freezing in unpressurised cabins. In addition to this, with Luftwaffe fighters and anti-aircraft fire to contend with, it required incredible skill and some luck to return from a mission unscathed. This book is a fitting tribute to these often uncelebrated heroes who took the war deep into the Third Reich, as well as a fascinating historical account of their experiences. with Osprey books. Some could be the editor's fault, like
the caption on page 16 (for picture opposite) stating that
"A B-17 bomber pilot, As well as the aircraft controls, the
pilot 'operated four wing guns that could fire in unison,
operated by depressing a single trigger on his control column...'"
This continues with drivel about aiming the plane's nose to
aim these guns.....I dare Mr Fremont-Barnes to show me anywhere
on B-17 plans(except one rare field mod of six 50's in chin turret
by 384th BG),where these wing guns exisist. I gave this book to
a group of former B-17 crewmen from the 384th Bomb Group and had them
read it, just to make sure I wasn't being to critical. They gave it
back marked up like a high school english paper and laffed. I have
sent these comment to Osprey but 'No Joy'! Instead of buying
one send me your address and I will send the marked up copy...
