( ) Hugh believes he knows best for Edlyn, she used to have a crush on him when she was younger. He finds her in dire straights a widow with two sons dependent on the monastary for a home. Throughout the story the men think they know best and that women need to be saved from themselves. Over time Edlyn proves she resourceful and capable and doesn't need Hugh to save her.
