Nous en sommes au troisième millénaire depuis qu'apparut dans le paysage compartimenté de la Grèce ce phénomène nouveau - même si l'on peut et doit tenter de lui trouver des précédents (phéniciens ?), voire des parallèles (Etrusques, chinois) - : la cité-État, avec ce qu'elle implique : l'autonomie du politique, la prise de décision collective, une religion, des institutions sociales tout à fait spécifiques. Là où l'Orient des Rois fait parler et décider les dieux, la cité donne la parole aux hommes qu'elle regroupe et qui ne sont pas tous les hommes. Autour de cette révolution, une des rares dont l'effet dure encore, un séminaire s'est tenu à Oxford d'octobre 1986 à mars 1987. A partir de ce séminaire et d'autres interventions, un groupe de savants, anglais dans leur majorité, mais aussi français, danois, américains et italiens, ont constitué, sous la direction d'Oswyn Murray et Simon Price, tous deux enseignants à Oxford, ce livre destiné à remplacer toutes les synthèses existantes, notamment celle de Glotz, La Cité grecque, qui est vieille de plus de soixante ans. Dans ce livre, la cité grecque, et pas seulement Athènes ou Sparte, est considérée depuis ses origines jusqu'à sa décadence, réelle ou fictive - en discuter est un des objectifs du livre -, dans sa diversité, géographique, institutionnelle, politique, juridique, religieuse, dans l'environnement méditerranéen qui est le sien.
