JulesJones: Two books which examine in different ways what happens to the recruits in an interstellar war who by the very nature of their service can never go back to their home culture.
JulesJones: The obvious Heinlein influence on Scalzi's "Old Man's War" is "Starship Troopers", but this also covers some of the same ground as Heinlein's YA "Space Cadet".
tottman: 47 Echo lacks the depth (and the universe-spanning scope) of Old Man's War, but the story and the fighting are both quite enjoyable. I won't say it's nearly as good as Old Man's War, but it is a quick, fun enjoyable read. And there's a lot of potential from this author I hope to see come out in future books.… (plus d'informations)
Samedi après-midi, alors que j’attendais le bus, j’ai lancé l’application liseuse de mon téléphone et ouvert "Old Man’s War", le premier roman de John Scalzi, que j’avais acheté avec le Humble Bundle – et ce alors que j’avais déjà deux autres bouquins en court de lecture. Ce matin, je l’ai terminé avant les deux autres; c’est dire si ce roman de science-fiction est prenant.
"Old Man’s War", c’est de la science-fiction militaire dans un contexte de space-opéra, avec une différence majeure: le héros, John Perry, s’engage dans les Forces de défense coloniales à l’âge de septante-cinq ans. Ce n’est donc pas exactement un perdreau de l’année, et pourtant, il va devoir réapprendre à vivre dans un univers fondamentalement différent de tout ce qu’il a connu jusqu’alors.
Au-delà de son aspect militaire – le héros va passer par un entraînement ultra-rigoureux, va participer à des missions de combat, aura ses moments de doute et d’héroïsme –, le livre touche à la question du transhumanisme et de l’identité humaine, de l’amour qui transcende les corps, et nous confronte à des cultures extra-terrestres passablement bizarres (et parfois assez ridicules). En général pour les éparpiller façon puzzle, mais passons.
Ce faisant, "Old Man’s War" montre quelques facettes d’un contexte riche, qui est développé dans toute une série d’ouvrages (cinq à ce jour) qui lui font suite. Qui plus est, il est écrit avec humour et un style plaisant. Alors, certes, ce n’est pas de la grande littérature – mais il se lit vite et bien.
"Old Man’s War", c’est un peu le "Starship Troopers" du XXIe siècle – ce qui est un peu méchant de ma part, en ce sens que j’ai détesté "Starship Troopers". D’ailleurs, John Scalzi reconnaît dans ses remerciements une dette considérable envers Heinlein.
Mais c’est un "Starship Troopers" qui ne se prend pas trop au sérieux (et bien sûr avec un arsenal technologique revu et corrigé) et avec des personnages qu’on n’a pas envie de savater au bout de dix pages. Ce qui est assez heureux, parce que savater des aînés est quelque chose d’assez mal vu. Et potentiellement dangereux, dans le cas présent.
Je vous recommande donc la lecture de "Old Man’s War" (traduit en français sous le nom "Le vieil homme et la guerre", ce qui est un joli clin d’œil littéraire); sans être révolutionnaire ni ultra-original, il est très plaisant et imaginatif. Une excellente inspiration pour les amateurs de space-opéra militaire. ( )

It costs money and it costs lives and no civilization has an infinite amount of either. So when you fight, you conserve. You use and equip only as much as you have to, never more.
The reason we use force...is that force is the easiest thing to use. It's fast, it's straightforward, and compared to the complexities of diplomacy, it's simple. You either hold a piece of land or you don't. As opposed to diplomacy, which is intellectually a much more difficult enterprise.
