The Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley changed naval warfare. The Hunley became the world's first successful submarine when it sank the Federal ship USS Housatonic during the American Civil War. It was a bitter victory since the Hunley and its crew were also lost in the attack. The sub was lost for 131 years. It was found in 1995 and recovered in August, 2000.
