Fleeing the pain of losing her twin to human mortality, Maeve Tremayne uses her powers to travel to the past, where she wanders the blood-soaked battlefields and hospitals of the American Civil War, relieving dying young men from their pain with the kiss of death. There, she meets a mortal doctor named Calder Holbrook, who immediately falls under her spell-and she reluctantly falls under his. Maeve also finds herself facing another battle, though not one of the heart-whether or not to succeed the cold and powerful Lisette as the reigning queen of the vampires. Maeve must navigate brutal wars of both human and immortal making-not to mention her own desires-as the forces of life and death threaten to destroy everything she has come to cherish. In the meantime, Calder is trying to convince her to transform him into a vampire so they can be together through eternity. The way the book reads, however, he seems more interested in the bennies of being able to travel to the future to gain more knowledge about medicine and to be able to bring back antibiotics and morphine, etc. for the Civil War soldiers.
The characters were both kindhearted and wanted to ease the suffering of mortals, but I found the romance part lacking. They were also both stubborn. This is one of those times where if you attended a wedding you would say, "Ah, I give 'em six months."
The first book in the series, "Forever and the Night" featured Maeve's twin brother, Aidan. He was a disgruntled vampire who fell in love with a mortal (Neely) and if there were any possibility of it happening, he would be willing to sacrifice anything to be given his mortality back.
Both books feature an ancient vampire, Valerian, who was both Aidan and Maeve's maker. I'm thinking there must be a third book in the series about him because it was made clear that he had an interesting past that needed telling.
[Edited] Just saw on another review that there are four books in this series. The next two are "Time Without End" and "Tonight and Always". ( )
