Introduction -- Two main purposes have guided the planning of the present collection of Peirce's writings: first, to introduce the general reader to the many sides of the most versatile, profound, and original philosopher that the United States ever produced; second, to include unpublished and inaccessible material in which Peirce presented the cultural or humanistic aspects of science and philosophy and which have been neglected by students and editors of his work.
