Perhaps "Errata" is a metafictional narrative about a short story assigned to Jeff VanderMeer (or a fictional version of Jeff VanderMeer) by a now-defunct literary journal (or a fictional version of a now-defunct literary journal) explicitly for the purposes of determining THE FATE OF THE WORLD. Or perhaps it's just a story about a Siberian penguin. It is incumbent upon you, the reader, to decide which stream of reality we are lazily floating along in. The real Jeff VanderMeer's recent books include the acclaimed novels Finch and Shriek: An Afterward. His short fiction has appeared in several Year's Best anthologies and has been shortlisted for Best American Short Stories. VanderMeer has also edited or co-edited several anthologies, including the prestigious Leviathan fiction anthology series, The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases, and the acclaimed Steampunk anthology. He has won the World Fantasy Award twice. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.… (plus d'informations)

I am writing this sitting in the waterlogged lobby of a rotting, half-finished condominium complex. I am surrounded by cavorting freshwater seals and have two pearl-handled revolvers in my lap, a bottle of vodka in my right hand, a human body in the freezer in the kitchens behind me, and a rather large displaced rockhopper penguin staring me in the face.

Still noodling this one over. Review to come.

(Favorite quotes: "It’s just a story about a penguin!" and "While I was writing it, I thought, 'Let’s try for something that would never get nominated for a Hugo in a million years.'") ( )

If you've read Jeff VanderMeer before, then you already know there are several Jeff VanderMeers. This is the story of one of them and it is purely Vandermeerian.

From the get go you're transported to a weird place, more emotionally than geographically, a weird place where this VanderMeer goes to try and pick up the pieces of his life, and to be a writer for hire in conditions that sound more like those of a mercenary. He's there to write a story he knows nothing about, to fix the metaphysical errata of several other short stories, which don't really seem to need fixing, and to be enlightened in some way. Luckily he has guides, a shaman, and maybe more importantly, a penguin.

Damn weird. Damn good. In the vein of the kind of writing in Shriek and City of Saints. ( )

I'm completely biased when it comes to VanderMeer's work. I'd give just about any and everything five stars. However, this weird little piece of fiction was so fun to read that biases aside, I think it deserves all five stars. It's slipsteam fiction at its finest! ( )

After the untimely demise of Argosy Quarterly—confirmed in late fall of last year after a long gap between issue three and the planned issue four—Jeff VanderMeer’s agent, Howard Morhaim, brought our attention to an unpublished story meant for publication in that journal.
