Fermentation is an erotic novel about the senses, carnal pleasures, and one woman's insatiable appetite. Set in a French hill town during a searing heat wave, it is a surreal and sensual tale of desire, satisfaction, and need. In the midst of a scorching summer, the garbagemen go on strike, the air turns stagnant, and Fermentation's young narrator, Odissa, becomes pregnant by her boyfriend, a fire-eater. In the eerie calm of the drys relentless heat, she awakens to an incredible craving for cheese. From Brie to Parmigiano to Roquefort -- Odissa finds that satisfying her hunger spawns a series of incredibly erotic dreams and fantasies. And as her baby grows, so does her constant craving, until it appears that Odissa herself may be ripening.… (plus d'informations)

Brief and dreamlike and vaguely experimental, "Fermentation" is a relentlessly sensual novel, and although it features a few sex scenes, I'm not sure I'd call it "erotic." Set in a exoticized Paris during an excruciatingly hot summer that coincides unpleasantly with a garbage collector's strike, this one is by turns sexy, stomach-churning, and enthralled with the pleasures of fine cheeses. Perhaps "sensual," a word that's too often used as a weak euphemism for "sexual" might really be the better term for this one: it's a book about pleasure and hunger, though some readers may be disappointed that it's often more concerned with cheese than sex. It's also an interesting exercise in writing the body: "Fermentation" is very much a novel of the nose. It made me want to visit a good cheese shop and stimulated my olfactory memory more than any other novel I've read since Patrick Süskind's "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer", though not always to pleasant effect. The author describes city's grime, its growing, fetid trash piles and its oppressive, stultifying heat almost too well. She seems to want to remind the reader that fermentation can produce things that are both enormously satisfying and unbearably nauseating, and she mostly succeeds.

In the final analysis, this novel's prose is a bit too purple, its protagonists a bit too gauzily idealized, and its concerns a bit too forthrightly sexual, to be called entirely literary, but it is well-written and the author rarely goes over the limit. Even its dialogue crackles nicely once in a while, which is pretty rare in this genre. It's not entirely satisfying, but is certainly interesting. Recommended to those who seek out curious books for their own sake and to readers who can pick out a good Camembert. ( )

I quick read erotic novel about a French girl who becomes pregnant to a fire eater. During her pregnancy she is obsessed with eating cheese. She also has many highly erotic dreams. I found the writing rather pleasing like the cheese. While very erotic it was not really vulgar. A little disappointed with the ending but it was worth the time spent. ( )

Behold, I saw upon earth men carrying milkk in earthen vessels and making cheese therefrom. Some was of the thick kind from which a firm cheese is made, some of the thinner sort from whci more porous cheese is mad, and some was mixed with corruption and of the sort from which bitter cheese is made. And I saw the likeness of a woman having a complete human form within her womb...Men and women alike, having in their bodies the seed of mankind form which arr procreated the various kinds of human beings. Part is thickened because the seed in it strength is well and truly concocted and this produced forceful men to whom are allotted gifts both spiritual and carnal...And some had cheese less firmly curdled, for in their feebleness they had seed imperfectly tempered and they raise offspring mostly stupid, feeble and useless....

>from the Liber Scivias of St Hildegard (translated by Singer)
In the womb of a mother was I moulded...being compacted with blood of the seed of man and the pleasure that accompanieth sleep.
