The packed cruise ship is a terrific nesting ground for a Lord and Lady of the Wamphyri on the run from E-Branch and the new Necroscope, Jake Cutter. By the time the ship is reported missing, the few beings still living on board will no longer be human . . . and the Wamphyri will be long fled to their next conquest. Korath, the vampire who lurks in Jake Cutter's mind, is determined to gain control of Jake's life, and Jake is equally determined not to let him have it. But to win this struggle Jake must confide in Ben Trask-and Trask, the head of E-Branch, is likely to want Jake dead the minute he learns of Jake's intrusive passenger! The spore garden planted under London by the third Wamphyri, Lord Swartz, is bearing bitter fruit indeed as a mysterious sleeping sickness-with a vampiric taint-slowly spreads among the population of Great Britain. E-Branch action teams have more on their plates than they can handle. They must locate terrorists who threaten the world with nuclear homicide; permanently close the Gate between the Wamphyri world and Earth; analyze the spore plague; and locate and destroy the three Wamphyri. Even the powers of Harry Keogh, the original Necroscope, summoned from the Great Beyond via the combined powers of E-Branch's strongest agents, may not be enough to defeat the monsters who have brought Earth to the brink of total destruction.… (plus d'informations)

Brian Lumley stories never get old. He always manages to find a way to come up with something that no one else has done. A cruise liner full of vampires. (Lumley VAMPIRES) As usual he takes us on a ride where no one is safe and even as the reader we tell ourselves "It would suck to be in their shoes" Once again he proves that he is capable and more than willing to take us into his world and just leave us standing on the side of the road with a sign that says "I am a human. Eat me." ( )

A new breed of Vamps meets a new breed of E-Branchers. Our new hero Jake Cutter is reluctant and not really into being a team player. However he is guided not only by necessity but some old friends. Our new vamps are no nicer than the old ones. Very cunning and deceiving they bring new challenges to E-Branch. ( )

Copy of my Launchpad review from 2001:
Again, Lumley returns to the universe of the Necroscope and the Whampiri. If you loved the great many sequels that came after Necroscope I then you will probably love these three. However, despite liking the story immensely I noticed two problems: firstly, not having red every previous Lumley book in this universe, some characters and references were a mystery, spoiling the story in places; secondly, it suffers from defeating-evil-at-the-end-syndrome (a nasty practice of having nigh indestructible great evils from before time defeated by unfeasible means). ( )

If you're tired of wishy washy, touchy feely vampires ala Rice, read any of the Necroscope novels. Lumley's vamps are evil with a capital E, and he gives the best explanation of where vampires came from and what causes vampirism I've ever come across. ( )
