This charming fantasy details the process that Spark the dragon had to go through in order to get over his fear of fire. In a town called Hardscrabble, they were searching for some more volunteer firefighters; however, they could find no one who wanted to do the job! One day a dragon named Spark came into the chief's office and convinced him to allow Spark to become one of the firefighter. He didn't tell the chief the reason for his decision... Spark was afraid of fire. He was scared of other dragons, wasn't able to guard his treasure, fight off mean knights, and the other dragons even poked fun at him. When Spark had completed all his rigorous training, he got to help fight fire! He used chemicals to put out a grease fire on the stove and the big water hose to fight a big fire in the woods. He even got to help evacuate people! One day, he put a fire out using his brains just as the chief told him - the chief also said that sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. The day came when just such a need arose! There was a barn fire that was too out of control to allow the firefighters to get through to get the animals out. Spark knew that he could go in, and did! He finally used his own fire to knock out the back wall and helped all the animals in the barn get out to safety. Now that he was unafraid of fire, Spark decided to move on from the fire station. He guarded his treasure, impressed princess dragons, and even scared off the mean knights. He still visited his firefighter friends every once in a while, just to help train. ( )

There are several reasons why I liked this book. I think that the author did a great job describing how to get over your fears of something. In this book the main character who is a dragon is afraid of fire and is unable to be a "real" dragon, so he decides to join the fire company and help fight fires. The dragon is able to learn how to be safe around fires and learns the basics. Once he has been doing it for awhile he discovers that he is no longer afraid of fire and that he is able to go back to his old life and become a "real" dragon again. This would be able to show children that they are able to over come their fears by trying something and working really hard to over come it.
