By turns wry and heart-rending, this first novel by up-and-coming North Carolina writer Nancy Peacock takes the form of an unvarnished reminiscence of growing up during the cultural craziness of the late '60s and early '70s. A very enjoyable read. I really enjoyed Peacock's voice and her characters. She paints a cozy picture through a child's eyes. She actually made it sound kind of nice to live in a ramshackle house with no running water. ( )

I felt this novel was a great attempt at recreating the feeling of the hippy era within it's limited focus. It was a trip back in time to some of my good and bad memories. The ending was a bit weak but I enjoyed the writing and loved it overall.
