Really reads like a 90s play -- I'm going to say it doesn't age well. ( ) This play picks up where Hamlet ends, literally replaying the last scene, as Hamlet lies dying. Fortinbras then becomes king, and begins a PR campaign to establish his legitimacy, which drives Horatio mad, because he has promised Hamlet he'll tell his story, and Fortinbras has other ideas. Surrounded by a castle full of ghosts, the few living remnants of the kingdom struggle to come to grips with the tragedy, and they do it in a comic way. Most of the characters go in directions that seem quite unexpected (except Hamlet; he still seems very much like his old self, except he's trapped in a television set). Strange and perhaps a bit outlandish. Hilarious in so many ways. I was told in college that the playwright created it as a metaphor for America's first war in Iraq in the 1990's, and though I suppose I can see some of those parallels, I really enjoyed this play all on its own. Lee Blessing's characters are so funny, and he gives voice to numerous things that I wish someone (Ophelia, especially) had been able to say during the actual Hamlet play. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
