"This is a study of the concept of otherness in Edmund Husserl's phenomenology. Its two main themes are Husserl's theory of temporality and his conception of the Other. The reason for examining these two issues together, is that they appear to be closely related, and that they illuminate not only each other, but also Husserl's understanding of what it is to be a subject. The chief purpose of the comparison is to give an expose of Husserl's understanding of the ego's relation to otherness. It is made clear that the transcendental subject is not an isolated ego, cut off from the world and from Others, but rather is open to other subjects, to the past and to the future, as well as to itself as another."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
