This is a fantastic informational book for students who love to read non-fiction. This book describes what took place when the Titanic ship sank. The information is presented in a clear way that is easy to read. There are pictures, text boxes and headings on every page so that the information is clearer to readers. I like the way that the book puts a box with the date and time that an event occurred to help the reader better visualize what happened. ( ) This is a fantastic informational book! Tons of people wonder about what really happened in this horrific tragedy. Teachers could really use this as a resource for teaching this topic. The pictures are very detailed and they make the reader really visualize what happened. Another feature I really appreciate is the "A Note to Parents". This note makes it easy for teachers and parents to evaluate if the child is ready to handle this level of text. Finally, I love the glossary in the back of the book. This would be helpful to a student who does not have all the vocabulary necessary. They could just look in the back and be experts on the topic. All in all, this informational book is excellent and I would highly recommend it to people of all ages. This book is a very informative book for children and the reasons this is an excellent book is because of the information, the pictures and captions, and the time line. The information in this book makes it a little easier for children to understand. Since this event happened over 100 years ago, it will be hard for young children to understand. In the first sentence, it reads, "-The Titanic- in 1912, they said that she was the greatest ship ever built: luxurious, unsinkable, and unbelievably big." All of these items stated in this sentence were reasons the ship was so amazing. Also, the book mentions real people on the ship (John Jacob Astor) so the children may relate to the book a little more. In addition, the images in the book are very informative. Since the book has real pictures from the book, children can see what the ship really looked like. Also, there are captions, so it will be more understandable to the reader. There are also some captions/definitions in the book. For example, "Life Jackets: Inside a life jacket were several floats about the size of a paperback book. This helped to keep the wearer afloat. The Titanic had enough life jackets for all the passengers." Finally, there is a timeline kept throughout the book so a child can understand how much time had passed since the boarding of the ship to the rescue. There are dates and times kept on these 'notes' so the children can keep track of the exact hour of these events. This just adds to the detail that is brought into the book so children can learn about the Titanic. Summary: This book details the events of what happened when the Titanic ship sank. The book also illustrates what each level was used for and how the people were divided by class. Titanic was a luxurious ship that was said to be “unsinkable.” Only three days into her maiden voyage, the ship hit an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the ocean. There were not enough life boats to save everyone on the ship. More than half the passengers perished that night. Personal Response: I am intrigued with the story of Titanic. This book has some information and pictures that I have never seen before. I thought this was a great book full of facts. Classroom extension: 1) Students can learn about sinking and floating. They can experiment with different materials and strategies to make something stay afloat. 2) This book could be used as a tool to learn about ships. There was a large ship called Titanic then it embarked on a journey to the sea which was launched in 1912. It was the biggest moving object ever built. It could carry 3,295 people. It was a safe and interesting journey. Suddenly, the Titanic hit an iceberg. The huge hull was damaged and the ship rapidly began to take in water. The Titanic had twenty wooden lifeboats but these were not enough so 705 survived but the others not. I like the book because it is very interesting. Riders ride in the titanic ship.
