The characters are realistic and interesting, the evil is deliciously frightening, and the twists and turns are enough to grab the reader's attention all the way through the story. As with any Clegg novel, this one is part love story, part personal discovery, part epic and 100% scary. This title may be difficult to find, but it is certainly worth the effort. The beginning of the story is exceedingly confusing. The timeline jumps all over the place, as do the characters. But Clegg's writing is so strong and so unique that he still manages to keep you hooked in. Just when you start losing a little interest due to confusion, he throws in some dialogue or descriptions that just pull you right back into the story.
Eventually the story all starts to fall into place and from that point on things just flow along nice and smooth, and characters you started out enjoying are made that much more enjoyable.
The only complaints I have about the book, aside from the confusing beginning, are that I would have loved to have gotten to know George Connally, the sheriff, a little bit more. He seemed like a great character that could have used more fleshing out, more dialogue. If somehow we could have had more of George, Prescott, and Cup hanging out, that could have been a winning team.
The scares also didn't scare me quite as much as some books, but I am still chalking that up to this being Clegg's debut.
I've read other reviews stating that this is far from Clegg's best, and with those reviews in mind and the enjoyment I got out of certain aspects of Clegg's writing style, I have chosen to go ahead and buy up a bunch of his other books. Though I still have yet to get the one I am most anxious to get my hands on, You Come When I Call You. Even though I only gave this three stars, it is a strong three stars. (
