Oh this is a fun one.
I've read several volumes, as I recall.
Never made it to the end.

Might revisit at a later date. ( )

Some girls have all the best luck in the world - but not Nanami. Having been bullied by her classmates for being poor and left homeless by her gambling addict father who runs out on her and his skyrocketing debt, there's no way her life could get any worse. That is, until a kind looking man leads her into an unusual set up: becoming the tochigami for a rundown shrine populated by a trio of yokai, including a very arrogant fox-eared man who would rather drink and carouse than serve Nanami's will. What's a girl to do?

Lots of my teens will like this because it has romance and demons and a kawaii style cuteness

There are 25 volumes in the Kamisama Kiss series. This is a shojo manga series. I was a bit worried I wouldn’t like this...that it would be too girly and fluffy for me. However, I ended up really liking it a lot.

Nanami finds herself homeless when her dad takes off fleeing his debt collectors. She ends up helping a young man escape a dog and in return he offers her his house as lodging; he doesn’t use it and is looking for someone to take care of it. However, when Nanami arrives she finds out that the house is a temple and that she is its new keeper. She also finds out that there are certain Yokai there already who are supposed to help her keep up the temple. One of them happens to be a very cranky fox man, who is also very sexy.

This was a well drawn manga that was easy to follow and humorous. I loved that Yokai are in here and that Nanami gets to journey in between worlds. This was a very well balanced story that I really enjoyed.

Overall I liked this a lot and plan on continuing the series. I liked the story and the characters and really thought this was a lot of fun to read. ( )

It has been such a long while since i read any manga but in a period in which I did I can still remember the huge disappointment that Kamisama Hajimemashita turned out to be.
I really liked the beginning of the story. The art is clean, the plot gripping, the characters interesting and the general pace of the narration and action just right.
The pity is that the whole thing had just so much potential to be a cut above the bulk of manga production.
The plot has a young stranded girl stepping temporarily in the position of a country diety of a remote mountain shrine aided only by small spirits and a belligerent fox demon, wrangled unwillingly in the position of guide and protector.
The potential that the author manages to waste after a promising beginning is immense.
Duties of a shrine god, encounters with japanese mythological figures, the struggle of a young girl filling a potentially perilous position without having any direction or clear instruction could have been all so interesting.
It seems to me that the author might have felt overwhelmed at the prospect of handling such a story or simply ran out of inspiration because all of a sudden we find our plucky protagonist who up to this point managed to negotiate and think herself cleverly out of sticky and dangerous situations (Yay) enrolled in high school and stuck in the midst of a love triangle - what?
Is the idea of someone operating outside the bounds of a public organised structure or stately mandated institution so alien to contemplate for too long for a japanese writer or reader? Could our girl protagonist not find a way to thrive without societies' frameworks and organised groups in which to exist? Could writing a character of that age outside of the banalities and restrictions of what passes as the literary tropes of everyday school life be inconcievable?
