This is an adaptation of The Brothers Grimm's fairytale, The Frog Prince. I can't say that I am overjoyed by this story. The princess attempts to trick the frog and does not keep her promise at first. The frog is persistent and finally breaks his curse, only to marry the princess and ride off to his palace. I might use this as a mentor text to introduce fairytales, but I can't say I'm overjoyed by the characters depicted. Reading level: Kindergarten to 3rd grade. ( )

This adaptation of the Grimm fairytale is beautifully and simply done. With simple dialogue, the message of keeping one's promises and being kind to others is depicted by the princess and the king. Fanciful, feathery illustrations add an element of magic to this picture book, as do the text framing and silhouettes. This is a classic fairytale that any young child will enjoy. ( )
