Tacky finds himself learning how to surf by filling up his shirt like a sail! However, he finds himself way out at sea and eventually ends up on an unknown island that is unlike anything he's ever seen before! He sits next to a "hairy" rock that ends up actually being an elephant! The elephant, not knowing what Tacky is, carries him with him to be flowers for his table (since Tacky is wearing a flowered shirt). Uh oh. Tacky is in trouble! What will he do? How will he get back to his island with his family and friends? Will he be able to get away from the elephant? Find out what happens to Tacky in this adventurous, fiction picture book! The moral of this story is even if someone doesn't seem like they fit in with you, try and get to know then because they might be fun to have around. I like the idea that to one person something could be garbage but to another it is gold. Tacky thought he ruined the tablecloth but Rocky loved what he had done to it. I also like the ending when the other penguins are waiting for him to come home. When Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly, and Perfect - penguins whose ice-block building, napkin folding, feather combing, and ballroom dancing skills were beyond compare - take a nap one day, their oddball companion decides to go surfing. And so begins an unexpected voyage to a tropical land, where penguin meets pachyderm, and where (as usual) Tacky's gift for making a mess comes in handy... Following upon Tacky the Penguin and Three Cheers for Tacky, this third adventure featuring the lovable bird with a mind - and a personality - all his own, continues to emphasize the virtue of non-conformity. But although Lester's narrative is entertaining enough, and Lynn Munsinger's watercolor illustrations continue to charm, somehow I wasn't quite as taken with Tacky in Trouble, as I had been with the previous two. It felt a little repetitive, as if Lester were telling the same story over again. Still, I'm going to hope that this is a weak installment, as I plan to continue reading in the series.
