I like noir and I think this qualified. A knight has a code of honor- though usually not the quirky , personal one you expect in noir. This knight, due to certain circumstances, qualifies as an anti-hero of sorts and while there were some bodice ripper type sentences that were hard to take, overall it was enjoyable ( )

Crispin Guest is a one-time knight, erstwhile traitor against Richard II, and is now known as The Tracker, making his living by finding things for people. A wealthy cloth merchant seeks his services to discover if his wife is being unfaithful and although Crispin doesn't like that kind of sordid work, he takes the job for want of money. And then the merchant gets himself murdered and things go all hooey.

I generally don't care for noir mysteries, but a medieval noir sounded just interesting enough to tempt me. I love Guest's character and the writing's pretty good, but I still don't like noir, and those elements of the story were what kept me from loving it. There's a fun twist toward the end that I didn't see coming, but overall the mystery wasn't all that seat-edgy, either. So, it was okay but not fabulous. ( )

This is the 2nd Crispin Guest book I have read and enjoyed. These are good mysteries and I love the time period in which they occur. ( )

I did enjoy the mystery and the elements of political intrigue, as well as the involvement of various historical figures. Crispin's sharp tongue, quick wit and sarcasm often get him into trouble, but can be endearing. Lovers of Medieval mysteries would enjoy it.

An interesting Medieval mystery, that does well for being written by an American (its not very noticable), although I stilll prefer Cadfael and the Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton.

Ehhh... I think the premise was okay but the story was overworked. I don't very often give a book less than a 3 and I think this would be worth reading from the library but given a second chance I wouldn't buy it (I listened to it and did like the reader). I also think noir is an exaggeration... ( )
