After stumbling upon a hidden trove of diaries, New Yorker writer David Grann set out to solve "the greatest exploration mystery of the twentieth century": what happened to British explorer Percy Fawcett. In 1925 Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization. For centuries Europeans believed the world's largest jungle concealed the glittering El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. But Fawcett had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions, he embarked with his 21-year-old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization--which he dubbed "Z"--existed. Then he and his expedition vanished. Fawcett's fate--and the clues he left behind--became an obsession for hundreds who followed him. As Grann delved deeper into Fawcett's mystery, and the greater mystery of the Amazon, he found himself irresistibly drawn into the "green hell."--From publisher description.… (plus d'informations)

The true story of idiots who thought traipsing through the forest's of South America with little more than machetes and brilliant mustaches was a good idea. Did Percy Fawcett actually find the Lost City of Z? Regardless of the outcome, Percy Fawcett is one fascinating guy. ( )

"The rain forest was not a garden of easy abundance, but precisely the opposite. Its quiet, shaded halls of leafy opulence were not a sanctuary, but rather the greatest natural battlefield anywhere on the planet, hosting an unremitting and remorseless fight for survival that occupied every single one of its inhabitants, every minute of every day." — Candace Miller, The River of Doubt

"Explorers are not, perhaps, the most promising people with whom to build a society. Indeed, some might say that explorers become explorers precisely because they have a streak of unsociability and a need to remove themselves at regular intervals as far as possible from their fellow men." ( )

Of the many lost and ill-fated expeditions into uncharted Amazonia, that of explorer Percy Fawcett, who disappeared without a trace with his son in 1925 while searching for a forgotten civilization, has undoubtedly raised the most questions and inspired the greatest number of subsequent search missions (many of which were also disastrous). Nearly 100 years later Journalist David Grann picks up where previous investigations left off, determined to uncover the mystery of Fawcett's disappearance once and for all.

I love a good story of survival, adventure and archaeology, and this was an interesting series of events I hadn't heard of previously. The deep Amazon sounds like hell on Earth, and I find it astounding that many of these explorers survived and had any desire to return. Though I found the ending to be somewhat anticlimactic after all the buildup, it was overall an interesting read. ( )

Even though this is a nonfiction book, it reads like an adventure story, great writing. I really liked it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what to do with it in the movie. ( )

As promising as the premise is (lost cities in the Amazon! Gutsy explorers! etc), the Lost City of Z is a dud. At the end of the day, we just don't know what happened to Fawcett, and the story of his life before his last expedition just didnt interest me either (he spends his time bouncing between being miserable in the Amazon and being unhappy in the British Empire.) Some people might enjoy reading about Grann's trip to the Amazon, but I'd advise you skip this one.

(I wrote this on my phone, so excuse any spelling/grammar issues) ( )

At times all I need is a brief glimpse, an opening in the midst of an incongruous landscape, a glint of lights in the fog, the dialogue of two passersby meeting in the crowd, and I think that, setting out from there, I will put together, piece by piece, the perfect city . . . If I tell you that the city toward which my journey tends is discontinuous in space and time, now scattered, now more condensed,
you must not believe the search for it can stop. - Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
