The Bookshop Dog is about a woman who owns a bookshop and a dog named Martha Jane. The woman loved her dog so much that she changed the name of the bookshop to Martha Jane's Bookshop. After the woman changed the name of the bookshop, people thought Martha Jane was the owner, but she was really the dog. Eventually people realized that Martha Jane was the dog and they would come to the store to see Martha Jane first, then buy books.

One day a man in a green jacket came to visit the bookstore and he seemed to love Martha Jane. Then the man in the green jacket visited Martha Jane every week and brought her a dog treat. Later in the story Martha Jane’s owner got sick. She had to find someone to take care of Martha Jane while she was in the hospital. Word got out that she needed someone to take care of Martha Jane and everyone volunteered. That became a big problem because everyone started to argue about wanting to take care of Martha Jane. Having associated Cynthia Rylant almost exclusively with her writing, whether that be middle grade novels like Missing May, or early readers such as Henry and Mudge, I was surprised to discover in The Bookshop Dog that she is also an artist. Her illustrations here are colorful, done in a naive, childlike style that will appeal to kids. The story itself is engaging, sure to please young dog lovers, who will long for the chance to meet Martha Jane themselves. All in all, a sweet little tale of a winsome canine, and the people who love her. As someone who always likes to find animals hanging out in the bookshops I frequent - until very recently, the one around the corner from work had a resident cat - I approve! ( )
