This book was written before broadcast television and the Internet became major influences in electoral democracies, but it still serves as an excellent handbook for the practical aspects of retail campaigning, of organizing and maintaining focus. Heinlein himself once ran for public office, and much of what he shares here comes straight out of his personal experience. ( )

The best thing to come out of the 1992 election was the long-overdue publication of this book, written by Heinlein in 1946. While dated in many respects, it's perhaps more relevant today than when it was written, because it gives us a glimpse of a world of participatory, retail politics missing from the evening news (but perhaps still happening in a local government near you). Give this book to anyone you know who wants to get involved in politics: there's both good practical advice and inspiration inside. ( )
