For a God whom philosophers have proclaimed dead, it's time for a little PR in this novel from the New York Times-bestselling author of Kramer vs. Kramer.   "God grants you an interview. Go to 600 Madison Ave., room 3700, Monday, at 11 a.m." When a struggling writer receives this typed note in the mail one morning, curiosity wins out and he finds himself keeping this mysterious  appointment. Soon he's in an ordinary conference room with an intercom on the floor, furiously scribbling shorthand notes as he interviews God, a deity who badly wants to improve His public profile. Sometimes God speaks through the intercom, other times He communicates as a hot dog vendor on the corner. But however God appears, He's giving this anointed journalist the story of a lifetime--and all he has to do is sell the story to the public.   Adapted as the classic film starring George Burns, Oh, God! is a warm and witty satire about life, the Lord, the media, and the need for some good publicity.   This ebook features an illustrated biography of Avery Corman, including rare images from the author's personal collection.… (plus d'informations)

An intriguing debut novel by an author who has always intrigued me. I have yet to see the movie with George Burns and John Denver (love the casting), but most people are probably familiar with this story of how God decides to reappear on Earth by means of interviews he grants to a 36-year-old playwright and free-lance writer. As might be expected, the first interview is met with some skepticism, but as the story gathers steam, people begin to react strongly to the message in varied ways, and the religious powers-that-be begin to take notice. An affable book of some charm and humor, I did feel that it would have been improved by expanding more upon the actual appearances of God (who does indeed appear here as a gently humorous little old Jewish man) -- these were my favorite parts of the book. But perhaps Corman was wise to focus more upon the human reactions to God's presenting himself again to us. ( )
