 Franzen’s brilliant achievement is that he creates a set of stereotypical characters and then opens the door and allows us see, in suspenseful, humorous, mesmerizing detail, their defining moments. What was once a silhouette becomes three-dimensional. The complexity becomes a dim mirror of our own complex interiority—writ large, the way we like it writ, because then we can’t help but see ourselves in it. > LES CORRECTIONS, par Jonathan Franzen. — Enfin un livre qui aborde le sujet des relations familiales en évitant soigneusement tout recours aux clichés ou à la facilité. Ici les personnages sont d'une complexité hallucinante et les thèmes abordés ratissent très large de façon à brosser un portrait crédible de notre époque. Le tout emballé dans une prose magnifique et grinçante à souhait. Gagnant du National Book Award en 2001, ce livre fait figure d'exception.
Extrait : « Trois heures de l’après-midi était un passage dangereux dans ces banlieues gérontocratiques de Saint Jude. Alfred s’était réveillé dans le grand fauteuil bleu où il somnolait depuis le déjeuner. Il avait fait sa sieste, et il n’y aurait pas d’informations locales avant cinq heures. Deux heures creuses étaient une espèce de sinus sujet aux infections. Il se leva avec effort et se planta devant la table de ping-pong, essayant en vain de capter un signe de vie d’Enid. »
